BRILLIMOUS

Brillimous is the first book of Jade Havenaar’s dystopian young adult trilogy that I had the privilege of designing.

Brillimous tells the story of a futuristic world in ruin. Earth is flooding, people are dying, and the world is in desperate need of hope. Enter Brillimous, a school dedicated to preparing the next generation for the trials they’re going to face by molding their minds and bodies with light therapy.

After Jade reached out to me, I pitched a couple concepts and typefaces that I felt would capture the attention of a browsing reader. Jade decided she didn’t want the cover to be an illustration but preferred it to be more realistic (my SPECIALTY)! We eventually landed on this wrap around photo realism piece that I created in Photoshop using roughly 12 different stock photos.

The cover image shows a large wave nearly crashing over the school Brillimous. The school is situated on a green, hilly landscape where the students often gather. Light rays arc across the whole scene, making it feel hopeful despite the ominous wave that represents the inevitable flooding of plant earth.
